A Spiritual Path to Recovery Battling addiction or other behavioral health issues can be one of the toughest challenges a person ever faces. Faith and spirituality can play an important role in recovery. In 2005, the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services created a Faith-Based Initiative to build partnerships with city churches, mosques, and synagogues to reach members in various faith communities. These coalitions provide another way to connect people with behavioral health and developmental disabilities with needed supports and services. DBH/MRS created a Faith-Based Taskforce comprised of staff, community leaders and a broad range of multi-denominational faith organizations. These groups work together to organize and present community forums at churches, mosques and synagogues across the city, in addition to an annual city-wide conference. The outreach events help faith organizations and their members learn how to access behavioral health services and reaffirm the important role faith can play in a person's recovery. Did you know.....the DBH/MRS Faith-Based Initiative has reached over 400 faith-based and community organizations?
